Librarians' Appraisal Revision

 

Competency 1 - Teaching and Learning

 

Performance Indicators

  • Works collaboratively with other faculty members to design learning experiences for students in the areas of reading, information literacy skills, and technology.

Looks like/sounds like (LL/SL) - librarian is seen in attendance at grade level/subject area meetings as much as possible; librarian and teachers plan, teach, and evaluate lessons in the library together

  • Provides ongoing learning opportunities for students in the areas of reading, research skills, and technology.

LL/SL - elementary library lessons involve in-depth discussions with students about various types of text selections; librarian teaches information skills within the context of a research/inquiry unit; librarian uses technology in teaching and guides students to use it in a productive manner. Examples: iPhoto, Kidspiration, Inspiration, iMovie, collaborates with district technology facilitators.

  • Encourage students to read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts for personal and informational needs.

LL/SL - librarian allows students free choice when checking out books; librarian promotes reading with several methods (book talks, read alouds, promoting current information in newspapers and magazines, hosting guest authors, illustrators, storytellers, journalists, etc., sponsoring student book clubs, sponsoring special activities during Children's Book Week, Teen Read Week, National Library Week, etc., providing students with links to web-sites devoted to reading, books, and authors), sponsors and promotes reading programs, such as Mockingbird, Bluebonnet, Lone Star and Tayshas.

 

 

Competency 2 - Program Leadership and Management

 

Performance Indicators

  • Oversees circulation and shelving of material and resources

LL/SL - Librarian is not always behind circulation desk checking out materials, but is available to assist students in locating materials at shelves or the online catalog; librarian promotes independent use of the library by encourag-es-ing self-checkout/in or- and has student/parent volunteers behind the circulation desk; Librarian -does not rarely/occasionally shelves materials, but instead teaches students and volunteers to do this

  • Works with campus administration and faculty to develop a library schedule that provides open access to the library for all students and teachers

LL/SL - number of classes in the library at one time is only limited by available space, not the librarian; librarian encourages flexible use of the library; elementary teachers may have a 15-20 minute fixed time for book checkout each week, but the time may be rescheduled if the library/librarian is needed for instructional purposes; the library remains open to teachers and their classes even when the librarian is otherwise engaged, teaching in the computer lab, at a staff development, at lunch, etc.

  • Delivers reports on the library program to campus administrators

LL/SL - librarian provides administrators with statistical information on circulation, number of classes using the library, types of instruction done in the library, etc.; librarian highlights library program activities via newsletters, e-mail, library web page, etc.

  • Uses technology and technology applications to assist with the management of the library program

LL/SL - librarian uses Microsoft Office applications to communicate with colleagues, manage the library budget, develop presentations for lessons, etc.; librarian uses the library automation system to locate and circulate library materials, generate statistics, etc.; librarian uses Contribute software to manage library web site; librarian uses digital cameras and posts pictures to the library web site

  • Synthesizes information from a variety of professional sources in order to develop and maintain an exemplary library program.

LL/SL - librarian reads and subscribes to current professional information from journals, listservs and blogs and implements new ideas learned; attends staff development sessions (PFK, Region 10, professional conferences, other workshops) to continue updating technology skills and "cutting edge" management of library

 

Competency 3 - Technology and Information Access

 

Performance Indicators

 

*Provides a balanced, carefully selected and systematically organized collection of library resources that is sufficient to meet students' needs and is continuously monitored to be current and relevant in each subject area.

 

LL/SL - librarian uses various tools at his/her diposal (Titlewave, reviews in professional journals, expertise of subject area teachers, student requests, attendance at children's and young adult literature staff development sessions, attends district vendor fair) to select materials for the collection; librarian systematically evaluates and weeds the collection of outdated and worn materials using TitleWise and the CREW method; librarian uses signage in a way that facilitates independent use of the library; librarian organizes the library collection according to district standards

 

*Model information problem solving processes in providing instruction about reference and research technique.

 

LL/SL - Librarian employs the steps of the Research Cycle when designing research projects with teachers; Librarian instructs students in the use of the Research Cycle model; librarian promotes library lessons and activities that focus on higher order thinking

 

*Employs existing and emerging technologies to access, evaluate, and disseminate information for possible application to instructional programs.

 

LL/SL - Librarian knows and uses various search methods to locate information; Librarian instructs students in the use of various searching and evaluation strategies for online resources; Librarian uses e-mail, online newsletters, the library web page, blogs, wikis, and other emerging technologies to communicate with library patrons students and faculty

 

Competency 4 - Library Environment

 

Performance Indicators

 

*Develops and maintains a flexible, functional and barrier-free library facility that conforms to national and state library standards.

 

LL/SL - librarian keeps public areas (circulation desk, work room counters, student tables, book shelves) clutter free; librarian re-arranges furniture as necessary for various activities taking place in the library; areas of the library, shelves, and cabinets are labeled to promote independent use of the facility by teachers and students

 

*Promotes access to resources and information during and beyond the instructional day and school year.

 

LL/SL - librarian allows students to come to the library for book exchange/small group research at any time during the day as space in the facility allows; librarian opens library to students and faculty 30 minutes before classes begin and 30 minutes after classes end each day, as campus policy allows; librarian may elect to have special evening programs for parents and students; librarian may elect to have special summer programs as district/campus policy allows

 

*Maximizes available space to permit displays of student, faculty and community produced materials and collections.

 

LL/SL - librarian offers teachers and others space in the library to display class/community projects

 

Competency 5 - Connections to the Community

 

Performance Indicators

 

*Develops library programs that offer families opportunities to participate in school activities and in their children's education.

 

LL/SL - librarian offers literacy programs for parents and children; librarian participates in Parent Education programs on Title I campuses; librarian has library open for check out on PTA nights

 

*Establishes partnerships with businesses, learning institutions, global communities, and other libraries and entities to strengthen programs and support campus goals.

 

LL/SL - Librarian partners with local businesses to provide refreshments/incentives for book clubs or other reading promotional activities; librarian arranges field trip to the local public library for a special exhibit; secondary librarians work with elementary librarians to create reading buddy programs

 

*Exhibit effective communication through oral, written, electronic and nonverbal expression and implement strategies for effective internal and external communications.

 

LL/SL - librarian makes presentations at faculty and PTA meetings regarding the library program, resources and services available; librarian creates and distributes newsletters, e-mail, web page; librarian maintains a positive attitude and displays the ability to work with all personality types

 

 

Competency 6 - Information Science and Librarianship

 

Performance Indicators

 

*Know theories, principles, and skills related to the selection, acquisition, organization, storage, retrieval, use, and evaluation of information

 

LL/SL - librarian selects materials according to the district selection policy; librarian follows appropriate procedure for submitting orders to Library Services; librarian meets deadlines with regards to budget and ordering; librarian maintains an organized facility that can be used independently by library patrons; librarian stores materials, equipment, and supplies in a way that they can be accessed by library patrons independently if needed; librarian promotes and teaches students and faculty how to use the online catalog for location of library materials, in the library, the classroom or at home; librarian teaches students and faculty how to search and access the resources available through the library web page; librarian teaches students note taking and other use of information skills; librarian teaches and promotes the evaluation of free Internet web sites before they are used for school projects

 

*Communicate effectively with students to determine their information needs.

 

LL/SL - librarian has student advisory club to make recommendations for the library program; librarian has suggestion box; librarian actively solicits input from the students in oral, written or electronic format

 

*Use knowledge of literature and information sources to help students select materials.
